About the projet

The idea for a series of round paintings came, like most ideas, without announcement.

While browsing a local flea market one winter morning, I discovered a pile of wooden bicycle wheel mouldings. It was obvious to buy them. Once home, nothing was more obvious than to use them for a series of paintings.

At first it was difficult. I had been used to using square or rectangular shapes, where our gaze spans out to infinity

A circle focuses us towards the centre. It is a constraint.

The working process

Round paintings

Euphorbia

While making this series of paintings, I found myself looking at fabric printing and especially the prints of my own father, Gerald Holtom.

Design is important in this work. I attempted elements of abstraction, but unconsciously always returned towards figurative imagery.
